When we were hiking all around it those few years ago, we decided we'd stay there at some point - and we did this past June. The thing about the Lighthouse, is it's a one-of-a-kind place and experience - and any "Tropical Locations Only" type travelers need not apply.

During our first visit to Clare a few years ago, we hiked around the Lighthouse but stayed in an excellent B&B on the harbor. We're on a first-name basis with most of the ferry crews between Cleggan and Bofin - and many of the residents on Inishturk. My wife and grandson and I have spent a month on or near Inishbofin Island during several summers, and this was our second visit to Clare Island. We look forward to returning for our Anniversary! We truly loved meeting the Clare Island locals and taking in all the beauty that the Island has to offer. The following day brought more sun than rain, and we spent the day hiking all around the Island and then relaxing back at the Lighthouse. And after our wonderfully private ceremony, she was there with celebratory champagne! Once the celebration at the Lighthouse was complete, the taxi was ready and waiting to take us around the Island for photos, then down to the Sailor Bar where the friendly staff let us behind the bar to pour our own Guinness! My husband and I savored the breathtaking view from the Achill Room (a must for couples looking for a romantic getaway!) while my sons enjoyed their privacy in the William Landers room downstairs. Everything, from the ferry staff helping me navigate the stairs off the boat in my wedding gown in the pouring rain, to the friendly and helpful taxi service and of course Roie and her wonderful staff at the Lighthouse - was perfect! When my husband and sons arrived on the earlier ferry to get settled in the lighthouse, Roie kindly took them in the kitchen for lunch and tea. My husband and I could not have picked a more stunning, memorable place to celebrate our elopement along with my two teenage sons.
